Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday the sudden passing of its co-CEO, Han Jong-hee, at the age of 63, due to a heart attack. His unexpected death leaves a significant leadership gap at the South Korean technology giant.
Han played a crucial role at Samsung, overseeing the digital appliances division and the device experience unit, which includes mobile phones and home appliances. His career with the company spanned nearly four decades, beginning in 1988. Over the years, he held various leadership roles, demonstrating innovation and strategic vision. In 2011, he led the product research and development team within the visual display division, significantly advancing Samsung’s technology and product portfolio. His contributions culminated in his appointment as co-CEO in 2022, a testament to his influence within the company.
In a statement, Samsung credited Han with helping solidify the company’s position as a global leader in the television market. His leadership guided the company through challenging business conditions, fostering growth and innovation.
Samsung expressed its condolences, stating, “Our deepest condolences are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Han was one of four executive directors on Samsung’s board and had recently hosted the company’s annual general shareholders meeting in Suwon, South Korea, just a week before his passing. During the meeting, he addressed concerns about Samsung’s stock performance, reaffirming his commitment to transparency and accountability.
Following Han’s passing, Samsung announced that Jun Young-hyun, who was appointed co-CEO in November of the previous year, will assume the role of sole CEO. Jun has been leading the memory chip division and was part of last year’s leadership restructuring amid heightened competition in the semiconductor industry.
The loss of Han Jong-hee marks a significant moment for Samsung Electronics, as the company reflects on his legacy and the impact he had on its global success.
