MTN, the country’s largest telecommunications provider in Nigeria, has begun implementing a tariff adjustment approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Subscribers may notice significant changes in their data and SMS costs.
A recent check using the *312# code on the MTN network reveals updates to data pricing. The widely used 1.5GB monthly plan has been replaced with a 1.8GB option, now priced at N1,500—an increase from the previous N1,000. Similarly, the 15GB plan now costs N6,500, up from N4,500, while the 20GB monthly plan has risen to N7,500 from N5,500.
In addition to data price adjustments, SMS rates have increased to N6.00, marking a 50% hike. There are indications that Airtel may have also raised SMS charges, though voice call rates remain unchanged for now, leaving users uncertain about potential further adjustments.
The NCC approved a maximum 50% tariff increase to help telecom operators manage rising operational costs amid economic challenges. The commission argues that the adjustment is intended to sustain investment in network infrastructure and innovation, which could ultimately enhance service quality, customer experience, and coverage.
While the new rates are lower than the 100% increase initially requested by operators, the NCC emphasizes its commitment to balancing consumer affordability with the need for continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure. The regulator assures subscribers that these adjustments aim to support long-term improvements in network performance and reliability.
