In 2024, Emirates SkyCargo transported an average of 3,820 tonnes of cargo in and out of Africa each week through 20 gateways, reinforcing its role as a key trade enabler on the continent.
As industry leaders gather in Nairobi for Air Cargo Africa, Emirates SkyCargo reaffirms its nearly four-decade commitment to the region. With a weekly cargo volume exceeding 3,800 tonnes, the airline continues to facilitate trade, linking African manufacturers, traders, and exporters with global markets.
“Africa has been a priority market for Emirates SkyCargo since our first flight to the continent in 1986. Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength,” said Khalid Al Hinai, Vice President Cargo Commercial, Emirates SkyCargo – Africa, UAE, and Middle East. “It is an exciting time to serve Africa, with potential game-changing policies such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which is set to shape the region’s economic development and boost trade potential both regionally and internationally. As a facilitator of trade, we are committed to connecting underserved markets to global supply chains, creating reciprocal economic and business opportunities that strengthen global economies.”
Emirates SkyCargo launched operations in Africa in April 1986, less than a year after its inception, with direct flights between Dubai and Cairo. Over the past 39 years, the airline has steadily expanded its presence, increasing capacity, destinations, and flight frequencies to better serve both local and global customers. In 2025, Emirates SkyCargo operates eight dedicated freighters and 172 passenger aircraft across 20 African destinations each week, connecting businesses to a global network of over 145 destinations.
The airline plays a pivotal role in sustaining the flow of goods to and from Africa's key markets. In 2024, Emirates SkyCargo exported more than 91,930 tonnes of perishable goods from Africa, the region's largest commodity uplift. Using specialized ventilated and temperature-controlled packaging, the airline transports strawberries from Egypt, seafood from South Africa, chilled meat from Tanzania, fresh fruits from Ghana, and bananas from Uganda, among other goods.
Horticulture remains a vital sector for African economies, with Kenya among the world’s top four flower-producing countries. Emirates SkyCargo operates twice-weekly freighters from Nairobi to Maastricht, Netherlands, ensuring fresh-cut flowers reach international florists within 24 hours via a temperature-controlled cool chain.
Beyond agriculture, African nations are ramping up industrial manufacturing to diversify and strengthen their economies. With the sector set for significant growth in the coming decade as part of AfCFTA initiatives, Emirates SkyCargo is well-positioned to support businesses with tailored logistics solutions that are fast, reliable, and efficient.
