Google has reached an agreement to acquire a portion of HTC’s extended reality (XR) business for $250 million, further strengthening its position in the virtual and augmented reality hardware market.
The acquisition follows the recent launch of Google’s Android XR platform, which aims to support a variety of XR devices, including headsets and smart glasses.
The deal will see the transfer of select HTC VIVE engineering staff to Google and grants non-exclusive intellectual property rights, although HTC retains the rights to continue developing and using the technology. This acquisition marks the second collaboration between the two companies, following Google’s $1.1 billion purchase of HTC’s smartphone unit in 2017.
Google aims to use the acquisition to accelerate the development of its Android XR platform, competing with rivals such as Apple and Meta, who are leading the charge in the XR space. Both Google and HTC have expressed interest in exploring further opportunities for collaboration in the future.
