Incoming President of the United States, Donald Trump has named former PayPal COO David Sacks as the new "czar" for cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement was made via Trump’s Truth Social platform on Thursday. "David Sacks will work on a legal framework to provide the crypto industry with the clarity it needs to thrive in the U.S.," Trump wrote.
Sacks, a well-known figure in the tech world as part of the "PayPal Mafia," has a notable entrepreneurial track record. He co-founded Yammer, a communications platform acquired by Microsoft for $1.2 billion in 2012, and founded Craft Ventures, a venture fund with investments in companies like SpaceX, Reddit, and ClickUp.
Sacks has long been an advocate for cryptocurrencies, having previously stated that digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum align with the “original vision” of PayPal to create a “database of money” for seamless transactions. While his views on AI policy are less documented, his generally deregulatory stance suggests he may take a less stringent approach to AI regulation compared to the outgoing administration.
