Osamu Suzuki, Visionary Leader of Suzuki Motor, Passes Away at 94

Osamu Suzuki, the longtime leader who transformed Suzuki Motor into a global automotive powerhouse, passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 94 after battling cancer, the company announced.

Suzuki, born on January 30, 1930, in Gifu, Japan, led the company as president from 1978 and later as chairman, overseeing its remarkable rise from a small regional automaker to an international brand renowned for its lightweight "kei" cars and global partnerships. Under his leadership, Suzuki’s sales grew more than tenfold, from 323 billion yen in 1978 to 3.18 trillion yen ($20 billion) by his retirement in 2021.

Known for his focus on efficiency and practicality, Suzuki championed compact, fuel-efficient vehicles and strategically pursued international expansion. He forged alliances with industry giants such as General Motors, Volkswagen, and Toyota, and spearheaded the company’s successful foray into India, where its subsidiary remains the market leader.
