Google Enhances NotebookLM with Interactive AI Podcast Hosts and App Overhaul

Google's NotebookLM app is taking its Audio Overviews feature to the next level with the introduction of interactive AI podcast hosts. This upgrade allows users to engage directly with virtual hosts to explore information from their uploaded documents in greater depth.

Initially launched as a way to generate AI-driven podcast summaries from user-uploaded materials—such as course notes or legal documents—Audio Overviews now enables real-time conversations. Users can ask the AI hosts follow-up questions, request clarifications, or explore alternative explanations for complex concepts. Google likens this feature to having a personal tutor that draws its knowledge from user-provided sources.

To access the interactive mode, users create an Audio Overview, select the "Interactive mode (BETA)" option, and hit play. When a question arises, users tap “Join” to speak directly to the AI host, who then responds. Google notes that while this feature is in beta testing and may exhibit minor glitches, it represents a significant step toward more immersive AI-driven learning experiences.

Since the launch of Audio Overviews in September, users have collectively generated over 350 years' worth of audio content, demonstrating the tool's popularity.

In addition to the interactive upgrade, NotebookLM is receiving a major redesign. The app now organizes its tools into three streamlined panels: Sources, Chat, and Studio. Alongside this, Google is introducing a premium enterprise version called NotebookLM Plus, offering enhanced features tailored to business users.
