Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Reappointed for Second Term as WTO Director-General

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reappointed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Director-General for a second four-year term, set to begin on September 1, 2025. She continues to make history as the first woman and first African to lead the global trade body.

Her unanimous reappointment, finalized during a special General Council meeting on November 28-29, 2024, followed an extensive selection process led by Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway. With no competing candidates by the November 8 deadline, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala presented her vision for the WTO's future and engaged in a dynamic dialogue with member nations.

Ambassador Ølberg praised her leadership, highlighting her role in securing major agreements at the WTO's 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences. ““Her leadership during turbulent times has been pivotal in strengthening the WTO’s capacity and relevance. Under her stewardship, significant outcomes were achieved, including milestones at the 12th and 13th Ministerial Conferences,” he said.

Since taking office on March 1, 2021, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has focused on restoring trust in the WTO and strengthening its role in global trade governance. Her accomplishments include:

Landmark Agreements: Leading breakthroughs on issues like fisheries subsidies and e-commerce, affirming the WTO’s capacity to deliver results.

Institutional Reforms: Advocating for greater transparency, efficiency, and adaptability in addressing modern trade issues.

As she embarks on her second term, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is poised to tackle critical issues, including enhancing dispute resolution mechanisms, promoting inclusive trade, and addressing emerging challenges such as digital trade and climate adaptation.

Reflecting on her reappointment, she stated: “The WTO has a vital role in fostering economic resilience, and I am committed to driving reforms that reflect the needs of all members. Together, we will work to shape a fair, rules-based trading system that benefits everyone.”

Her leadership will remain instrumental as the WTO navigates evolving global economic dynamics and strengthens its position as a cornerstone of multilateralism.
