UK Freezes Assets, Imposes Travel Ban on Angolan Billionaire Isabel dos Santos

The United Kingdom has sanctioned Angolan billionaire Isabel dos Santos, enforcing a travel ban and freezing her assets under its global anti-corruption sanctions regime, the government announced on Thursday.

Dos Santos, the daughter of Angola's former President José Eduardo dos Santos, who ruled for 38 years until 2017, has long faced allegations of corruption in Angola and internationally. She denies the accusations, claiming they are part of a politically motivated campaign against her.

The British government accused dos Santos of embezzling over £50 million ($63 million) during her tenure as head of Angola's state oil company, Sonangol, and siphoning off more than £300 million while serving as a director of the telecoms firm Unitel.

In September, dos Santos lost a legal appeal to overturn an order freezing £580 million of her assets, tied to a lawsuit at London’s High Court brought by Unitel. Interpol issued a red notice for dos Santos in 2022. She has stated she resides in Dubai.

The UK also sanctioned seven additional individuals in connection with its global anti-corruption efforts.
