Trump Appoints Elon Musk to Lead New ‘Office of Government Efficiency’

In a move aimed at overhauling federal operations, President-elect Donald Trump has announced Elon Musk as the head of a newly formed “Office of Government Efficiency.” The initiative, designed to streamline government operations, seeks to cut bureaucratic red tape, eliminate wasteful spending, and reshape federal agencies for greater efficiency.

Musk, known for his roles as Tesla CEO and owner of X, will co-lead the office alongside entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, according to Trump’s announcement on Truth Social.

While the full scope of the office’s work is still evolving, Trump’s press release outlined its mission to bring an “outside perspective” to federal reform. Working closely with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget, the office aims to foster a more innovative, business-minded approach to government operations. The reform initiative is set to conclude by July 4, 2026.

Musk shared the announcement on X but did not specify how this role might affect his responsibilities at his various companies. Musk, who has invested millions of dollars into a Super PAC supporting Trump’s campaign, has previously expressed a desire to collaborate with Trump on reducing government spending. However, he humorously mentioned the potential for “merch” related to the initiative, reflecting on Trump’s statement that “Republican politicians have long aspired to the objectives of ‘DOGE’.”
