Microsoft has announced that the Xbox Avatar Editor will be discontinued on January 9, 2025, marking the end of its customization tool for creating digital avatars.
The decision stems from "low engagement" and a strategic shift toward other player-focused experiences, the company shared in a FAQ.
Launched in 2018, the Avatar Editor offered users the ability to design personalized cartoon avatars with diverse customization options, including free and paid cosmetics. Microsoft will issue refunds for any Avatar Editor purchases made between November 1, 2023, and the app's closure date.
Introduced during the Xbox 360 era, Original Avatars will remain unaffected and usable on Xbox 360 hardware or as profile photos.
Players can still use the Avatar Editor to set a profile picture before the shutdown, with detailed instructions available on Xbox's support forums.
