Zoom is preparing to unveil a cutting-edge feature that allows users to create custom AI avatars, a key step in the company's ongoing AI expansion. Set for release in early 2025, this innovation aims to transform virtual communication by offering users personalized digital versions of themselves.
These AI avatars will enable users to send short video messages, adding flexibility to remote work environments. By uploading a brief video clip, Zoom's AI will generate a digital twin that closely mimics the user's appearance and voice. This feature, initially part of Zoom’s Clips function for concise updates, will enhance multitasking by allowing users to manage tasks across various settings.
To address concerns over deepfakes and security, Zoom’s Chief Product Officer, Smita Hashim, emphasized the company's commitment to safety, implementing advanced authentication, watermarking, and strict policies to ensure transparency.
The custom avatars will be part of the AI Companion add-on, available for an additional $12 per month. While users on paid Zoom plans can access pre-designed AI avatars, the customization option will be exclusive to those with the AI Companion package.
Zoom CEO Eric Yuan has expressed excitement over the potential of AI avatars to handle routine tasks such as representing users in meetings and managing emails, aligning with Zoom’s goal of streamlining work processes through AI-driven automation.
In addition to avatars, the AI Companion add-on will offer expanded features, including integration with platforms like Zendesk and Asana, and customizable templates for meeting summaries.
