Senate Confirms Lawal as NSIPA National Coordinator, Prof. Saleh as NAHCON Chairman


The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Dr. Badamasi Lawal as the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). His confirmation followed the adoption of a report by the Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Investments during a plenary session on Thursday.

Presenting the committee’s report, Chairperson Sen. Idiat Adebule stated that Lawal demonstrated extensive knowledge and competence in addressing issues related to social investments during his screening. She highlighted his qualifications and ability to lead the agency effectively.

Supporting the recommendation, Sen. Diket Plang (APC-Plateau) emphasized the importance of appointing leaders who are not only qualified but also mentally alert and responsible for managing national programs. Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed hope that Lawal’s appointment would help resolve the recent scandals surrounding the agency.

Dr. Lawal, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Katsina State, replaces Halima Shehu, who was suspended due to allegations of financial misconduct.

In a related development, the Senate also confirmed Prof. Abdullahi Saleh as Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). His confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, led by Sen. Bello Abubakar (APC-Niger), who noted that Saleh met all legal and ethical requirements for the role.

The Senate commended Saleh’s extensive experience and professionalism during his screening, with Deputy Senate President Sen. Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) praising the thorough vetting process conducted by the committee.
