The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that National Identification Number (NIN) data modifications will no longer be handled at enrollment centres. Going forward, all updates to personal information must be completed through the NIMC self-service modification portal. The move is aimed at speeding up the process, reducing congestion at physical centers, and bolstering data security by allowing users to make changes online at their convenience.
According to NIMC, the self-service portal offers several benefits, such as 24/7 access, quicker processing times, and enhanced security. Although the portal had been available earlier, many users opted for physical visits due to difficulties with the online system, including issues with OTP verification and processing delays.
Users can now update their names, phone numbers, dates of birth, and addresses via the portal. Fees for these modifications vary, with a date of birth change costing N16,340, while name and phone number updates are priced at around N1,522.
To use the portal, individuals must verify their NIN, login, and select the “NIN Modification” option. After making the necessary payments, they can upload the required documents and submit their requests. A National Population Commission (NPC) certificate is mandatory for date of birth changes, though users can obtain an online birth attestation if needed. Once approved, the updated NIN slip will be sent via email or can be downloaded directly from the portal.
Step-by-step Instructions
To use the NIMC self-service portal for modification

- Navigate to the dashboard and From this menu, select the “NIN Modification” option, which will allow you to make changes to your personal information.

- Upload your NPC certificate along with any required supporting documents.
- Review your modification request and submit it after checking the attestation box.
- A modification transaction slip will be generated instantly.
Upon approval, you will receive a notification, and your updated NIN slip will be sent to your email. You can also print the slip directly from your dashboard.
Despite the convenience of the self-service portal, some users have encountered challenges, including difficulties in receiving OTPs and rejections of modification requests after payments. However, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) remains dedicated to enhancing the platform and encourages users to leverage it for more efficient and secure data updates. NIMC is actively working to resolve these issues and improve the user experience, ensuring smoother access for all NIN holders.
