In a major step toward revitalizing Nigeria's digital infrastructure, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has revealed that IHS Towers, a leading telecommunications infrastructure company, has committed to rebuilding the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Innovation Park in Kano. The facility, which was looted and vandalized during the August 1, 2024 '#EndBadGovernance' protests, plays a vital role in enhancing Nigeria's standing in the global digital economy.
The NCC Innovation Park symbolizes Kano and Nigeria's ambition to lead in the fast-growing global digital sector. Minister Tijani underscored the Park’s significance, noting that it will be a vital resource for over 300 young people in Kano participating in the government's 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative. The program is designed to equip three million Nigerians with critical digital and technical skills, aiming to position Nigeria as a leader in the global tech industry.
Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Dr. Tijani shared the news of IHS Towers’ commitment to fully restore the Innovation Park. This follows his promise in August to accelerate the Park's restoration to support the 3MTT fellows and others who rely on the facility for hands-on, practical learning opportunities.
“I am pleased to announce that we have received the support of IHS Towers, which has committed to the full renovation of the location. This will allow us to finally put it to good use,” the Minister stated. He also reassured the youth, particularly the 3MTT fellows in Kano, that their aspirations for contributing to the global digital workforce are valid and achievable.
The Innovation Park was a key target during the August protests, during which looters ransacked the facility, stealing valuable equipment, including desktop computers and furniture. Originally built under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the Park was weeks away from its official commissioning before the attack occurred.
According to Dr. Tijani, the stolen equipment included 150 desktop PCs and laptops, significantly impacting the facility’s preparedness. While nearly all infrastructure had been completed, final work on the power generator was still pending at the time of the protest.
The renovation of the NCC Innovation Park is more than just a physical rebuilding—it underscores the nation’s renewed commitment to empowering its youth through digital skills and fostering their participation in the global tech economy. The Park’s restoration is vital for Nigeria’s ambitious digital initiatives, including the 3MTT program, which aims to secure a competitive edge for the country in the evolving global tech landscape.
