9mobile Amplifies Mental Health Awareness with Successful X-space Event

In its ongoing commitment to raising awareness about mental health, 9mobile hosted a virtual X-space event titled "Navigating Mental Health in a Digital World," in observance of World Mental Health Day. The event spotlighted this year's theme, "Mental Health at Work," emphasising the need for accessible mental health care for all.

The event featured an expert panel including Dr. Olalekan Makinde, a respected consultant in community and public health, Dr. Alexandra Odiari, a mental health specialist, Dr. Olayinka Jibunoh, a psychologist and mental health advocate, and Amara Esomchi, a certified mental health therapist and counsellor. Together, they explored the stigma surrounding mental health and the potential of social media to promote mental wellness.

Commenting on the initiative, 9mobile's PR Lead, Chineze Amanfo, said, “We are proud to facilitate these essential conversations. In a world where digital connections can sometimes mask feelings of isolation, platforms like X-space allow us to bring awareness to mental health. We remain committed to using our resources to foster impactful discussions and support mental wellness.”

Highlighting the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, Amanfo added, "Health is a core pillar of our CSR, and we’ve taken significant strides in the health sector. We will continue to drive meaningful impact through initiatives like these."

Dr. Makinde underscored the importance of prioritising mental health, stating, “Health is a priceless asset. In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, maintaining mental well-being is crucial for long-term success and fulfillment.”

Amara Esomchi echoed this sentiment, adding, “Health encompasses physical, mental, and emotional well-being. While strong social connections can foster support and a sense of belonging, poorly managed relationships and pressures can contribute to stress and anxiety. It’s essential to build meaningful connections that enhance overall wellness, both personally and professionally.”

Therapist and Mental Health Advocate, Amara Esomchi, further emphasised, "Health is all-encompassing—it is not just about physical well-being but also mental and emotional balance”. She discussed the crucial role of social connections in maintaining this balance. “On one hand, strong social bonds can provide support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. On the other hand, if not carefully managed, unhealthy relationships or social pressures can lead to stress and anxiety. It is essential to build meaningful connections that nurture your well-being, both personally and professionally."

Dr. Alexandra Odiari stressed the importance of treating mental health with the same attention as physical health. “By normalising conversations around mental wellness and eliminating stigmatisation, we create a society where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness.”

Dr. Olayinka Jinunoh noted that in today’s digital age, we must be mindful of how we engage with social media and learn to practice digital hygiene. “The importance of social media detox is a way to maintain mental clarity and well-being. Constant online engagement can lead to stress and taking intentional breaks allows the mind to reset, stay focused, and remain mentally alert. It is essential to find balance and practice self-care in our digital habits.

The telecommunications company understands the importance of mental health in the fast-paced, technologically driven world of today, just as much as physical health. Hence the need to raise awareness of the value of mental health among its subscribers, employees, and the larger Nigerian community by facilitating the conversations on online platforms such as X-space.
