The 2024 UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) final has made a significant economic impact of €23 million (approximately US$25 million) for the Basque Country, according to reports by three local authorities. The remarkable return on investment (ROI) is 17 times greater than the budget allocated by the regional institutions.
The event not only enhanced the Basque Country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by an additional €13.18 million (US$14.3 million) but also provided a direct economic benefit of €4.37 million (US$4.75 million) to the local administration. Beyond the fans in attendance, an estimated 21,691 people engaged with various festivities and activities surrounding the event, enhancing the overall atmosphere.
The media impact of the final was equally impressive, with an estimated cumulative economic value of €39.1 million (US$42.5 million). The final, held at the San Mamés stadium, saw Barcelona triumph over Lyon before a record crowd of 50,827 fans, contributing to a total mobilization of 72,518 individuals, including those who participated in outdoor events. Notably, over half (58%) of the attendees were women, and 60% of the matchgoers also belonged to this demographic. Furthermore, 72% of those involved were under the age of 45, with 65.4% coming from outside the Basque Country.
In terms of direct economic contributions, attendees spent €8.8 million (US$9.56 million) on hospitality, transportation, and tourism activities. The contracting of services from 87 local companies generated more than €2.9 million (US$3.15 million), while an additional €2.7 million (US$2.93 million) was attributed to accommodation and organizational expenses.
