Extreme E has announced the cancellation of the remaining races in its 2024 season as the series prepares for its transition to the hydrogen-powered Extreme H. The canceled races include the planned events in Sardinia, Italy, and Phoenix, USA. However, the series is still exploring alternative venues to complete the season, though there is no guarantee this will happen.
The decision to cancel the races comes as Extreme E shifts focus and resources toward the development of its hydrogen-powered vehicles. The investment required for this transition has affected the completion of the electric car era, but the series hopes to stage at least one more race to provide a proper conclusion for Extreme E.
In more positive news for the series, Extreme H has made significant progress, with its hydrogen-powered car passing mandatory chassis crash tests with the International Automobile Federation (FIA), making it the first hydrogen racing car to achieve this milestone.
Commenting on the decision, Alejandro Agag, founder and CEO of Extreme E, said: “As we transition to Extreme H, we are fully committed to becoming the world’s first hydrogen racing series. The excitement around hydrogen-powered racing grows daily, and we are investing heavily in this innovation. While we want to conclude Extreme E appropriately, we must also focus on our future with Extreme H.”
Agag thanked the Automobile Club d’Italia, Regione Sardegna, and the Italian military, as well as the Phoenix team, for their support, expressing hope for future collaboration. He also confirmed that resilience tests for the hydrogen car’s tanks and battery packs are still underway, with track testing scheduled for later this month and in October. Production of the cars is expected to begin soon, with delivery before the end of 2024.
