BMW has announced plans to begin commercial production of hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2028, as part of a joint effort with Toyota to establish hydrogen technology as an alternative to battery-electric cars. The German automaker will develop a new generation of fuel-cell powertrains in collaboration with Toyota, with a hydrogen variant of an existing BMW model set to debut that year.
While hydrogen-powered cars have faced challenges like high costs and limited fueling infrastructure, BMW and Toyota aim to overcome these barriers by sharing development and parts procurement to reduce costs. Proponents highlight hydrogen’s long driving range and potential in regions where electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is lacking.
Currently, hydrogen vehicles like Toyota’s Mirai and Hyundai’s Nexo represent a small portion of the market, with global sales dropping to just 9,000 units in 2023. However, BMW’s ongoing efforts, including a test fleet of hydrogen-powered iX5 SUVs, reflect its belief that hydrogen powertrains could complement its EV lineup, such as the upcoming Neue Klasse series.
Pricing details for BMW’s hydrogen cars have not yet been revealed.
