The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the launch of a massive 90,000-kilometer fibre optic cable network, set to commence in February 2025. This ambitious project aims to significantly enhance Nigeria’s broadband infrastructure by expanding the existing backbone network from 35,000 kilometers to a total of 125,000 kilometers.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, revealed the plans in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the initiative has received the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. To fund the expansion, the government is partnering with development fund organizations, ensuring the project will bolster connectivity and improve digital services across the nation.

In a related development, Kenya’s government is also undertaking a similar fibre optic network expansion. However, Kenya is adopting a unique strategy by deploying the cables along existing electricity power lines. This innovative approach is expected to lower costs and accelerate the deployment process, setting a precedent for efficient infrastructure development in the region.
This nationwide broadband expansion in Nigeria is poised to enhance internet accessibility, support digital transformation, and drive economic growth by providing reliable and high-speed internet to businesses and individuals alike.
