Lagos State is set to launch an innovative digital platform aimed at simplifying monthly rent payments for residents. The new initiative is expected to attract around 100,000 users and generate approximately ₦2.5 billion in annual revenue. The platform is a collaborative effort between state agencies, including the Ministry of Housing, and various technology partners.
This development comes in response to escalating rent complaints in Lagos. Over the past four years, rental prices have surged by over 100%, significantly straining residents' finances.
The state government anticipates that this digital platform will address these issues by offering a transparent and streamlined rent payment process, thereby alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by the populace.
An investment of approximately ₦300 million is being allocated to the project, which will cover the next 4 to 6 months and will be directed towards the platform’s development, operational costs, and marketing efforts.
This strategic move is in response to the insights shared by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akindeli-Fatai, regarding the challenges of affordable housing in Lagos. The state’s burgeoning population and the scarcity of available land have compounded these housing issues, prompting the government to seek innovative solutions such as this digital platform.
In conjunction with the introduction of the new digital rent payment platform, the Lagos State government is taking measures to address the issue of exorbitant rent charges by landlords.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akindeli-Fatai, has issued a stern warning to property owners regarding unjustifiable rent hikes, indicating that the government will intervene against those who engage in such practices. The surge in complaints about high rental costs has prompted the state to intervene to ensure fairness in the housing market.
This initiative is a key component of Lagos State’s broader strategy to address the ongoing rent crisis and simplify the rent payment process for its residents.
