African Banker magazine has announced the nominees for the highly anticipated 2024 African Banker Awards, recognising outstanding individuals and institutions driving progress in the financial services sector across Africa. With a focus on business sustainability, gender equality, and banking infrastructure, this year's edition promises to showcase the continent's most innovative and impactful initiatives.
A total of 59 esteemed institutions and personalities have advanced to the next round of selection, vying for the coveted Trophies of the Pan-African banking event of the year. Since its inception in 2007, the African Banker Awards have been synonymous with excellence and leadership in the African banking industry, honoring those who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to driving economic growth and financial inclusion on the continent.
The winners of the 2024 African Banker Awards will be unveiled at a prestigious gala dinner on May 28 in Nairobi, Kenya. The gala dinner is set to be a highlight of the official program of the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Africa and beyond.
Organized by IC Events and under the esteemed patronage of the African Development Bank, the African Banker Awards serve as a platform to celebrate and showcase the achievements of Africa's brightest talents and most innovative institutions, driving positive change and shaping the future of finance on the continent.
The nominees were selected from a record number of applications from across the African continent. For the first time in its 18-year history, three of the candidates selected for the most prestigious title of Banker of the Year are women, reflecting the growing number of female leaders in finance.
Speaking about the Awards, Omar Ben Yedder , chairman of the Awards committee, highlights the growing role of development finance institutions. “Over the years, we have seen the role of DFIs evolve,” he said. “They play an important role in structuring transactions and spurring development, often filling gaps in areas that are underserved or underrepresented.
“The funding gap in the areas of infrastructure, trade and climate means that the banking sector as a whole will need to be even better capitalized. But looking back over the 18 years of existence of the Trophies, we see that the size of our national banks and the transactions they can structure are like night and day. The progress made is considerable.
