Nigeria Accelerates Transition to Clean Energy, Plans Launch of 2,700 CNG-Powered Vehicles by May 29

Nigeria is about to embark on a transformative journey towards sustainability with the introduction of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative. The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Tinubu, is working with the private sector to implement this ambitious plan in advance of its one anniversary on May 29. The effort seeks to transform the transportation landscape by deploying thousands of CNG-powered buses and tricycles across the country, ushering in a transition away from traditional fuels and towards greener energy sources.

As part of a massive N500 billion palliative budget, the Federal Government has set aside N100 billion to procure 5,500 CNG vehicles, including buses and tricycles, as well as 100 electric buses. Furthermore, nearly 20,000 CNG conversion kits are planned for purchase. In addition to these measures, the government intends to create a statewide network of CNG refilling stations and EV charging points.

Ahead of the May 29 milestone, the government is set to launch approximately 2,700 CNG-powered buses and tricycles, with further plans to establish 100 conversion workshops and 60 refueling sites across 18 states by the close of 2024. These bold measures, unveiled by the Presidency's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, underscore Nigeria's unwavering commitment to modernizing its transportation sector and championing sustainable energy solutions.

The partnership between the government and the private sector has been instrumental in driving the CNG initiative forward. With over $50 million in investments from private entities, including refueling stations and conversion centers, the initiative is poised for success. Additionally, stringent safety standards and regulations have been developed to ensure the safe and reliable conversion of vehicles to CNG.

The deployment of CNG buses and tricycles is expected to catalyze the transition towards cleaner energy solutions in Nigeria. By reducing emissions and lowering operating costs, CNG vehicles offer a sustainable alternative to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles. With plans to produce over 600 buses in the first phase and subsidize conversion kits for commercial vehicles, the government aims to make CNG adoption more accessible and affordable for the public.

Furthermore, private-sector collaboration, as demonstrated by companies such as NIPCO and BOVAS, is critical in advancing the effort. These companies not only provide refuelling services, but also serve as conversion centres, so helping to the broad adoption of CNG vehicles around the country.

The project also prioritises safety and regulatory requirements, resulting in the creation of a safety policy document containing 80 norms and rules for operators. Furthermore, the MYCNG.NG App will provide real-time information on CNG conversion and refuelling stations around the country, increasing openness and accountability.
