The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) declared that the country's fixed-line numbering format has been changed from 8 to 10 digits by simply adding a "02" prefix before the existing fixed number. The telecoms regulatory agency noted that the adjustment was in accordance with its responsibility to manage Nigeria's numbering resources under the enabling statute, the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003.
However, the commission stated that the present numbers will continue to run concurrently until the cut-over date of December 31, 2023. The new numbering format beginning with the "02" prefix will go into effect on January 1, 2024.
For example, with the new order, instead of dialling 09461700, please call 02094617000.
In the new numbering format, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano's current number formats of 014630643, 094630643, 084460643, and 064460643 will be 02014630643, 02094630643, 02084460643, and 02064460643 accordingly.
The Commission stated that the change solely impacts Fixed Telephone Numbers and that the present mobile numbering format will NOT CHANGE.
The announcement is made to convey one of the NCC's primary responsibilities, and it is consistent with the practises of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency in charge of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
According to NCC data, there were 96,771 actively connected fixed lines in the country as of July 2023, accounting for 0.04% of the total subscriber line of 220,860,987.
