Adobe Brings Generative AI to Photoshop for Image Extension and Object Editing

Adobe Photoshop is introducing a new generative AI tool that will allow users to swiftly extend photos and add or delete objects with text suggestions. The new feature, tagged Generative Fill is one of the first Creative Cloud products to take advantage of Adobe's AI picture generator Firefly, which was introduced as a web-only beta in March. Generative Fill is available in beta today, but Adobe claims it will be fully released in Photoshop later this year.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) can help a wide range of people achieve their goals in a variety of creative undertakings. Adobe certainly hopes so, as it announces a game-changing new tool to help its AI goals.

When expanding image borders or generating new objects, Generative Fill acts within individual layers of a Photoshop image file, giving users three alternatives to choose from. While users can leave the prompt blank to let the system stretch the image on its own, offering some direction provides better results. Generative Fill, like Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill function, gives users more control over the process.

Although it has several limits, Adobe Photoshop's Generative Fill demonstrated outstanding possibilities. The tool excelled at filling in backdrops and empty spaces but created items such as vehicles and puddles that appeared out of place within the image at times. Nonetheless, Generative Fill exhibited its capacity to replicate elements from the original shot, such as the ability to simulate light sources and shadows.

The integration of AI image generation tools like Generative Fill into mainstream applications such as Photoshop makes them accessible to a wider audience. Creators can now leverage these tools within familiar software to bring their visions to life more efficiently.
