Entry Opens For €5 Million Euros High-Technology For Humanitarian Aid

You can now apply for the European Union’s  €5 Million Euros for High-Technology for Humanitarian Aid. The European Union is awarding 1 million euros to one winner in each of the following categories: a) shelter and related assistance; b) water, sanitation, and hygiene; c) energy; d) health and medical care, and e) open category.

Application is open till September 15, 2019.

The prizes will be awarded to the entries that best address the following cumulative criteria applicable to all the five categories:

• New solution tested successfully and safely in a real environment, with a demonstrated potential of adaptability and scalability under different humanitarian aid settings
• Quality and sustainability of the solution based on the frugal application of advanced technologies
• Affordability and cost-effectiveness for constituents and organizations responding to crises
• Engagement with end-users and solution responding to the needs of those in a most vulnerable situation taking age, gender, disability, and minority into consideration, and perspective of a business case.
• Solutions should be novel at the time of the submission, demonstrating the added value and potential of one or more advanced technologies for international organizations, NGOs, end-users, local actors, and the private sector.

Eligibility and award criteria

The contest is open to all legal entities (i.e. natural or legal persons, including international organizations) or groups of legal entities.

The prize will be awarded, after the closure of the contest, to the contestants who, in the opinion of the jury, demonstrate a solution that best meets the following cumulative criteria.

New solution tested successfully in a real environment, with a demonstrated potential of adaptability and scalability under different humanitarian aid settings and responding to the needs of those in a most vulnerable situation (taking age, gender, disability and minority into consideration) quality and sustainability of the solution based on the frugal application of advanced technologies. These including the technological components (no ICT-only solutions) affordability and improved cost-effectiveness for beneficiaries and organizations responding to the crisis engagement with end-users and perspective of a business case.

The EIC prize High Tech for Humanitarian Aid will be presented in the margins of the Africa Innovation Summit. The event "Horizon 2020 Info Day: Funding opportunities for cooperation between Africa and Europe through H2020" will provide a dedicated slot to present the principles of the prize, the rules of contest and provide a space for valuable exchanges among African innovators, researchers, investors, private sector and humanitarian actors on humanitarian innovation and affordable high tech solutions. We are looking forward to enlarging the community around the prize in the frame of the EU-Africa partnership.
