The club said it has reached an agreement to purchase Deportivo Tacon, a Madrid-based women's team founded in 2014 that is set to play next season in the Liga Iberdrola, Spain's top division.
It was previously believed that Tacón would become the official Real Madrid women’s team from the start of the forthcoming season, but a statement released by the club yesterday (Tuesday) has revealed that CD Tacón will play under its existing name in the 2019-20 LaLiga Femenina Iberdrola season, before being absorbed into Real Madrid in time for 2020-21. It will, however, play its home fixtures at the Ciudad Real Madrid facility starting immediately.
Real Madrid have long been criticized for being one of the few top European clubs without a women's team. Their biggest domestic rivals, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, have women's sides that regularly compete for titles.
More so, the Madrid club have also officially unveiled their away kit for the 2019/20 season – a shirt that pays tribute to the club’s supporters.
The navy jersey is finished in gold as a nod to Real Madrid’s claim as Europe’s most successful club.
