“Combined with our technology, efficient operations and thousands of drivers in South Africa, we plan to build the best food delivery service for the people who already use our services daily”, chief executive officer and co-founder of Bolt, Markus Villig said in a statement.
Bolt remarks that it operates in more local cities in South Africa than any other ride hailing service so perhaps it will have an edge over Uber and its Uber Eats service.
The company is already accepting restaurant sign-ups as well as sign-ups for drivers who would ultimately deliver the food.
Bolt changed its name so as to explore other modes of transportation aside from cars and other businesses.
The company hopes to compete against the likes of UberEats and Naspers-owned Mr D Food. UberEats has a network of about 1200 restaurants while Mr D Food has a network of over 1,400 restaurants and delivers to over 1,900 suburbs in South Africa.
