Nigeria’s first free Wi-Fi app, Red Cheetah, yesterday emerged as the leading lifestyle app on Google Play Store in Nigeria. Prior to its emergence, the app has maintained its position as one of the top 10 apps in the lifestyle category.
The app, which was launched in March this year by leading broadband service provider, SWIFT Networks, attained the milestone, beating stiff competition from top e-commerce, fashion and top celebrity apps in the lifestyle category.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SWIFT Networks, Mr. Charles Anudu, said: “Red Cheetah is at the heart of the digital lifestyle of Nigerians, and we are confident that this innovative app will open a new chapter not only in how we consume contents in this country, but how best to enjoy all the wonderful things we love to do online at no cost.
“We are particularly thrilled to witness well over 91% increase in usage levels and downloads complemented by impressive ratings on Google Play Store by our users. For us, this feat underscores our commitment to transform the way people access the internet in Nigeria.”
The app, which is currently available in over 400 top locations in Lagos, including Hard Rock Cafe, Barcelos, Tastee Fried Chicken, Sweet Sensation, 3CHub, SLOT, major campuses in the state and BRT buses, offers free broadband service to users supported by advertising revenue by leading partners and global brands.
Upon download, users enjoy as much as 1GB of internet data daily to remain trendy and up-to-speed on all the contents they love.
Commenting on the local context which formed part of the insights that inspired the app, Mr Anudu noted that Nigeria boasts of enormous talents which, when thoroughly harnessed, as seen in the development of the application, can help solve the nation’s problems and create opportunities for all.
To enjoy the free Wi-Fi service, users are required to download the Red Cheetah app from the Google Play Store and follow a simple, one-time registration process.
