NLC Shut Down MTN Offices in Enugu, Bauchi, Kano

Officials of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) during the early hours of today stormed offices of MTN in Kano, Bauchi and Enugu States with a protest expressing their displeasure over the casualisation and poor welfare of its members by the telecommunications company.



In Enugu, the Union members arrived the Zik Avenue office of the telecommunications mobile service provider as early as 7:30am on Monday, July 9, 2018 with labour banners and flags.

According to the protesters, the picketing will continue until Wednesday.

Led by the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Virginus Nwobodo, the workers carried various placards and chanted solidarity songs a and accused MTN of violating Nigerian labour laws. He said the company was not interested in workers welfare and has continued to enslave and pay peanuts to workers despite the huge money they are making.

The NLC Chairman, Bauchi State chapter, Mr. Hashimu Gital also led union members to shut down the office of MTN in the state capital.

Speaking to reporters at the premises of the MTN office, Gital said: “This is to advance issues of decent work, better conditions of service for workers.”

“Every worker is entitled to better working conditions, but the telecommunications company is fond of regularly renewing employment contract with its workers as a way of shying away from the respiratory similitude of paying gratuity and pension to them.

“We are giving them three days as warning as directed by the national office of the NLC in Abuja,” he said during the protest.

Same protest happened in Kano and BrandArena gathered that the protest might also hold at MTN offices in other part of the country tomorrow.
