IOC Considers Africa For 2022 Youth Olympic Games; Commences Host Selection Process

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday announced a new host selection process for the 2022 summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) as it considers Africa as host of one of its sporting events.



The IOC members last month voted in favour of the African initiative following a recommendation from the Executive Board. An Olympic Games event has never been hosted in Africa, and the IOC hopes that a Youth Olympics could build a road to a summer Olympic Games on the continent.

The IOC is targeting African National Olympic Committees (NOCs) for potential host cities. A targeted approach based on the principle adopted by the IOC Session in 2016 will replace the competitive stage seen for previous YOG host city selections, with a view to making the process more streamlined, simpler and shorter.

The document issued outlines the approach that the IOC is taking, characterised by ongoing open dialogue and identification of the best use of the potential host’s resources, as well as key dates and deliverables for the IOC and interested parties to work to.

Following previous editiom of the event held in Singapore in 2010, and Nanjing, China in 2014, the Argentine city will play host to the next edition of the summer YOG from October 6-18, 2018.
