Portuguese football legend Luis Figo has taken up an advisory role with Uefa, the sport’s European governing body.
Figo will work with Uefa president Aleksander Čeferin and the organisation’s Football Division across matters including technical aspects of football, laws of the game and the overall attractiveness of the sport.
The 44-year-old, who won 127 international caps during an illustrious playing career, will also lead Uefa’s ambassador programme.
Čeferin said: “Luís Figo was a fantastic player who was exemplary in the way he conducted himself both on and off the pitch. He is a highly respected figure within the game and I am very pleased he is joining our team. His tremendous football experience will be a very valuable asset to Uefa.”
Figo added: “I have been lucky to gain a wealth of experience and I believe I can have a positive influence in passing on my knowledge. Football is constantly evolving. I am privileged to be involved with Uefa and I would like to thank Aleksander Čeferin for giving me this opportunity.”
Figo is no stranger to football administration and ran for the presidency of global governing body, Fifa, in 2015 before eventually withdrawing ahead of the election, which saw Sepp Blatter re-elected for what was to be a fifth term in office.
Figo started his career with Sporting in his native Portugal before going on to play for Spanish LaLiga clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid, and Italian Serie A team Inter Milan. Figo, a Ballon d’Or winner in 2000, won eight league titles during his career and also won the Champions League, Uefa’s top-tier club competition, with Real in 2002.
Figo joins fellow ex-professionals Nadine Kessler and Dejan Stanković, his former Inter team-mate, as Uefa football advisors.
