…as LGs, LCDAs embrace Cleaner Lagos Initiative
Lagos, the Center of Excellence, is witnessing a gradual transformation in the aspect of waste management as illegal dumpsites, blocked drainages and indiscriminate disposal of refuse on roadsides across the state are paving way for a cleaner, greener and healthier environment.
The Governor Ambode-led administration having conceived a pragmatic plan known as the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) which is aimed at effectively managing waste in the state, has sensitized residents across the 20 Local Governments (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) on efforts of the government and the responsibility of citizens towards the success of the initiative
Series of stakeholders’ engagement forums were organized in Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe (IBILE) with the aim of raising awareness about the CLI, which is expected to kick-off fully this September. The LGs and LCDAs were zoned under the IBILE classification and their representatives attended the interactive stakeholders’ meetings.
The Lagos state Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare Samuel, Executive Secretary, Public Utilities Monitoring and Assurance Unit (PUMAU), Mr. Adekunle Otusemade; Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Environment, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe; and Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Mr. Abiodun Bamigboye, along with other officials from the Ministry of Environment, met with the various leaders and stakeholders from the LGs and LCDAs.
The Commissioner said the CLI was carefully conceived to tackle the challenges of waste management and to achieve a safe and healthy environment for residents. According to him, every locality including areas lacking vehicular access would be serviced, as waste bins in different sizes would be strategically provided for communities
He enjoined residents to play their role in maintaining clean, healthy environments and to refrain from engaging in indiscriminate dumping of refuse or pilfering of waste bins because offenders would be brought to book by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) which has been set up to professionally enforce and safeguard the environment.
