Nokia And Apple Are Back In Court Again Over Patent Infringement

Nokia and Apple are back in court again after five years of accord. Nokia on Wednesday filed several complaints in a lawsuit against Apple over patent infringement in the United States and Germany.

This is coming just a day after the iPhone maker sued Acacia Research and Conversant Intellectual Property Management, both of whom license patents, for allegedly engaging in anticompetitive behavior with Nokia to “extract and extort exorbitant revenues unfairly” from Apple and other smartphone makers.

In a statement by Nokia, Ilkka Rahnasto, Patent Head of the company, said “Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today's mobile devices, including Apple products... After several years of negotiations trying to reach an agreement to cover Apple's use of these patents, we are now taking action to defend our rights."

The two companies have been to court before, with both sides suing one another back in 2009. In 2011, they agreed on a settlement. Nokia claims Apple has declined to license several other patents it uses since the 2011 agreement.
