The Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 will be unveiled at a grand ceremony in Lagos on Thursday, October 20th, 2016. The event, organized to celebrate and showcase exceptional teachers and the teaching profession, will be held at the Grand Ball Room, Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The race for the Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 has sparked huge excitement and expectations from teachers all over the country. After a rigorous screening process, the pool of state champions are now in the final race for who will be named the best teacher in Nigeria for 2016.

The Maltina Teacher of the Year, established to recognise, reward and celebrate exceptional teachers in Nigeria, is an initiative on the platform of the Nigerian Breweries - Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund. The Fund was established in 1994 by Nigerian Breweries to enable it play a more active role in the development of education in Nigeria. Since then, the Fund has impacted over 20, 000 students across the country. It has constructed and furnished over 280 classrooms, 280 sanitary facilities and libraries in 40 communities across Nigeria. It has also granted scholarships to deserving students and tertiary institutions.

According to Kufre Ekanem, Corporate Affairs Adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc, “the Education Trust Fund expanded its intervention in education in Nigeria in 2015 to teachers through the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative. The initiative was hinged on the realisation that teachers seldom get the recognition they deserve in spite of the pivotal role they play in training, coaching and determining the quality of education.” At the end of the long process of collecting, screening and judging of entries, 19 State Champions, 2 runners-up and an overall winner, Mrs Rose Nkemdilim Obi, emerged at a grand ceremony in commemoration of the World Teachers Day.

Like last year, Mr. Kufre Ekanem informed that each State Champion will get a Five Hundred Thousand Naira cash prize (N500, 000.00). The 2nd and 1st runners-up will receive an additional Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N750, 000.00) and 1 Million Naira (N1, 000, 000.00). The Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 will get an additional One Million Naira (N1, 000,000.00) instantly plus One Million Naira every year for the next five years, a development training opportunity abroad and a block of 6 classrooms built at the school where he/she teaches.
