Total Becomes Official Sponsor Of AFCON

International energy provider, Total, has formally entered into agreement with the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) to become the official sponsor of CAF’s football tournaments starting from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

Consequently, next year’s Cup of Nations will be known as Total Africa Cup of Nations.

In a release by CAF on Thursday, the continental football body said that Total would sponsor ten of their flagship competitions, which include the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), the CAF inter-club competitions (CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup) and the youth competitions, which include U-23, U-20, U-17 AFCONS.

Others are the Women Africa Cup of Nations and the Futsal Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking in Paris on Thursday, where the sponsorship deal was brokered, Issa Hayatou, CAF President, said: ‘This partnership is a major milestone in our ongoing search for additional resources to accelerate African football’s development, bring its governance up to date, upgrade its sports infrastructure and advance its performance globally.

“As a leading multinational in its field, with strong ties to Africa, Total will make a significant contribution to CAF’s initiatives to foster personal and professional growth for young Africans,” Hayatou said.

There was, however, no disclosure of financial aspect of the deal. But when Independent contacted Laetitia Maccioni, Total’s media personnel, on this issue, he declined revealing any monetary aspect of the sponsorship.

Responding to an email sent to him, Maccioni said:  “We do not disclose the figure. What is more important to us is why we do it.”
