Amid plagiarism controversy, Japan scraps Tokyo 2020 logo

Amid plagiarism controversy, organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have scrapped the official logo for the event after convening an emergency meeting Tuesday.

The Oympic committee however debunked accusations of plagiarism levelled at its designer, Kenjiro Sano.

Following the launch of the logo in July, Belgian designer Olivier Debie raised questions over the logo, claiming it was too similar to his logo for the Theatre de Liege. Debie and the theatre subsequently filed a lawsuit at a local court having called for Tokyo 2020 to cease using the logo.

Sano has also apologised to the people of Japan, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and to sponsors for "causing trouble", adding that a new logo would be decided as soon as possible and in open competition.
