Ahead of the 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards slated for July 18 in KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa organisers of the made a stop in Lagos with a concert.
Speaking in Lagos last Friday July 3, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Viacom, Alex Okosi said that the organisers of the continental award are concerned about taking the event across Africa.
‘We do want to have it across the continent although we currently have a partnership with Durban. Nigeria has hosted twice and it would definitely be back. The hosting happens organically, we don't force it’ he said.
Commenting on how the selected nominees emerged, Okosi revealed that over a 100 music experts which include radio personalities and music journalists across the continent helped MTV to come up with the list of nominees on each category.
"We sent all the music we play on our channel to the music experts to help us come up with the nominees. Once we get that, we sent it out for the public to vote. Artistes across the continues are all pushing for their votes right now. We want to help spread African music beyond the continent boarders. We celebrate African young talents. We are proud of what we have done and we believe that the more united we are, the more we can make strong impact."
Responding to his view on Nigerian music industry, the Managing Director of Viacom said: "Nigerian artiste on a contemporary stand point are a big force to recon with in African music. If you go to Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and so on, Nigerian music is what you hear in their clubs, and parties. I'm not just proud of Nigerian because of that but also that MTV Base have done lot of work to promote African music. There are big opportunities for the African music out there.
Artistes like Diamond Platnumz, Yemi Alade, Patoranking, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Iyanya among many others were present at the event. Cobhams, D’banj, Phyno, Timi Dakolo, Jesse Jagz, also turned up.
The concert featured performances from popular acts including Yemi Alade, Lil Kesh, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Tanzania’s big export, Diamond Platnumz.
Nigeria has hosted two of the five editions of MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) with the first ever event held at the Velodrome in Abuja in 2008.
