The Managing Director of Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell, Onga, Toptea and Loya milk, Mr. Olivier Thiry, has said tree planting is a global phenomenon used to create a green environment that can protect our earth from the drastic effects of global warming.
As part of the collaboration, Promasidor provided space within its premises where a tree was planted by the State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, assisted by Thiry.
Speaking at the occasion, Thiry explained that the partnership with the Lagos State Government and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) was to re-affirm Promasidor’s commitment to best global environment practices. “We are very proud to host and be associated with this noble project,” he said.
He added that Promasidor operates within an eco-friendly environment as its principal alternate source of power is gas generators. To run these generators, he stated, is more expensive than diesel generators but they are confirmed to be environment-friendly owing to its less offensive emissions.
Governor Ambode, represented by Mrs Adetola Onisarotu, Director, Laboratory Services in LASEPA, said the collaboration between Promasidor and the LASG was aimed at renewing commitment to the preservation of environment, mitigation of global warming and its attendant climate change through annual tree planting exercise.
The Governor said the theme for this year’s Tree Planting Day, ‘Tree, the lungs of the earth’, clearly underscores the importance of trees in sustaining human life through the purification of the air that we breathe in.
He therefore, enjoined all Lagosians to embrace tree planting as a way of life in order to restore the dignity of the earth. His words: “We must desist from indiscriminate felling of trees; and for every tree that must be removed; at least five must be planted.”
Speaking earlier, Engineer Adebola Shabi, represented by Mr. K.A. Bello, Director, E-Waste Unit, commended Promasidor for partnering with the Lagos State Government in the protection of our environment and ensuring sustainable environmental development of the state.
He said sustaining the sanctity of our environment through commitment to tree planting must be a collective responsibility. He advised residents in the state to always remember that just as the lung is very essential for good quality and healthy life so are trees essential for the sustenance of healthy environment because trees are lungs of the earth.
