Airtel picks Akpoborie, others for Rising Stars

Ex-internationals Jonathan Akpoborie, Mutiu Adepoju and Ann Chiejine have been selected as technical advisers for the 2015 Airtel Rising Stars, which kicked off on Tuesday across Nigeria.

The technical advisers will oversee the selection of players in both the boys’ and girls’ categories in all the zones. The competition started on Monday and will end on September 4.

Airtel Rising Stars is Africa’s largest grassroots Under-17 football tournament aimed at discovering future football stars.

The initiative has helped turn 129 teenagers into professional footballers since it was launched in 2011.

Airtel Nigeria last Wednesday in Lagos unveiled Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, as the brand ambassador for the Airtel Rising Stars, a move that was described as increased motivation for the participating players.

The CEO, Airtel Nigeria, Segun Ogunsanya, said the best players would be selected for a coaching clinic at a yet-to-be-named venue.

“Zonal champions will get medals and certificates. Winning teams will get N500, 000, and the second-placed teams will get N250, 000,” Ogunsanya said.
