Owing to the ongoing xenophobia attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, Brand South Africa and telecom giant, MTN joined African family to condemn the attacks.
"We assure all our partners in the continent that South Africa stands firmly against all intolerances such as racism, xenophobia, homophobia and sexism. As such security forces are hard at work around the clock to protect vulnerable communities in the country.
"The country remains true to its founding ethos that any problems or issues of concern by South African citizens must be resolved peacefully and through dialogue", Brand South Africa said a statement issued on Friday, April 17.
Brand South Africa assured its partners that South Africans are generally not xenophobic; this is attested to by the high number of foreign nationals who have been successfully integrated into communities all over our country, in towns, cities and villages.
"Preliminary work done towards resolving this current challenge indicates that the root causes are socio-economic issues that have been raised and are being attended to by all South African role players" its said.
Brand South Africa expressed its sympathies to the regrettable loss of lives and injuries suffered during this unfortunate occurrence, adding that "we are one Africa bound by many areas of commonalities and our spirit of UBUNTU (humanity - I am because you are) will prevail even under the trying circumstances".
Telecom service provider, MTN Group, in an SMS to its subscribers on Sunday said, “MTN joins the African family in condemning the attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. Let’s all say NO to xenophobia!”
Meanwhile, the South African government last week condemned the recent violent attacks on foreign nationals in the strongest terms, stating that it is a criminal offence which will not be tolerated. The government promised to do everything in its power to ensure that peace and stability is restored for all who live and work in the country.
Attacks against foreign nationals since the start of the year were reported in Soweto, Benoni, Attridgeville, Khayelitsha, Inanda and KwaDukuza. The situation has been recently worsened following the death of three foreign nationals on 9 April 2015 in Chatsworth and Umlazi in Durban. These attacks have resulted in foreign nationals being displaced and a public outcry that foreign run businesses are not being allowed to operate in certain areas.
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko has also launched the “We Are One Humanity” campaign in a bid to stop the wave of violent xenophobic attacks.
