Uber promises to create 1 million jobs for women by 2020

Uber has announced its newest partnership, this time with UN Women, the organization dedicated to gender equality. The global ride-hail company wants to create 1 million opportunities on the Uber platform for women around the world by 2020.

Currently Uber has over 160,000 drivers in the U.S. — 14% of which are women — and “hundreds of thousands” of drivers worldwide.

This commitment is made on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration. In 1995, world leaders gathered in Beijing to come up with a plan to advance gender equality and to empower women all over the world.

Here’s the message from UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Uber CEO Travis Kalanick:

Today, UN Women and Uber are launching a partnership to work together around the world toward a shared vision of equality and women’s empowerment.

We intend to invest in long-term programs in local communities where we live and work, as Uber commits to creating 1,000,000 jobs for women globally on the Uber platform by 2020.

Join the conversation and help ensure the UN Women’s mission of economic empowerment is heard.

This important mission can only be accomplished when all women have direct access to safe and equitable earning opportunities. We look forward to a partnership where UN Women and Uber will drive more access to these types of opportunities around the world.
