Rwanda to initiate One Digital ID per Child Program

Following partnerships with major ICT corporations such as Intel and Positivo BGH, the Rwandan government is transforming its One Laptop per Child program into a One Digital ID per Child Program.

The program is in line with the effort of the government to transform education into a student centric system enabled by technology.

Rwanda’s Minister of Education Silas Lwakabamba said: “We are currently working on a holistic ICT for education master plan which includes four pillars such as upgrading of school infrastructure that involves access to the network and also access to devices, the development and acquisition of digital content, the training of teachers and students to be able to use the devices and also access the digital content, and the maintenance of the devices.”

Lwakabamba said: “With connectivity more and more available and major cloud solutions being implemented by companies like Microsoft, an opportunity is unvailed for students to share the device and through a login and password process.”


According to the plan, students will have a unique digital ID and space where they can access to their lessons, homework, school reports and personal files. This program is focused on better teaching and better learning leveraging the use of technology as tool for education.
