Musical Artists Explode On Twitter

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the influx and use of Information Communication Technology(ICT) has been on the increase likewise the new media. The use of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, linkedIn,2go, eskimi, has brought more advantage than disadvantage to the world through its ability to provide information in many perspectives, and helping to link up friends, business partners, and the likes. Social media is a powerful tool that possesses both advantages and disadvantages -- Twitter is no exception. 


Twitter, specifically, disseminates information through 140 characters backed by an hastag that leads the user to the concerned page for more information. The 21st century's rapid information production rate can make it difficult for one to keep up with the times. Twitter provides quick and brief notes on current trends, which makes it easier to stay updated on the latest and greatest.

Over time, it’s been observed that Twitter users love to visit Twitter in order to stalk celebrities on Twitter. On Twitter, users have a kind of close-and-personal access to celebrities. It gives users free admission to the private lives of his or her favorite stars. It allows them to view celebrities as they truly are (as actual human beings).  Twitter is the best social network for keeping in touch with one’s fans, It’s built on conversation and personal interaction, it’s an easy platform for self-promotion. In order to get the most out of Twitter, Celebrities have an organised posting strategy that complements their other profiles, By becoming part of a wider community based on your fanbase, genre or local area, and By discreetly pointing fans back to your latest release, download or tour details. 

As a result of all these, fans keep following their favourite stars on Twitter, while Celebrities on their part, clamor for more fans, because it offers them the opportunity to engage directly with fans. It's seen as being more open than Facebook or any other social platform. Artists can follow any band they're into and connect with them easily. It also makes that artist-to-fan communication much easier than it ever was before, and different artists utilize it in different ways.
 


Recently, Twitter underwent a research to find out the Music Year on Twitter for 2014, and they came up with some statistics.

They conducted a research on the most followed artists on Twitter as of December 2014, music artists who experienced the most Twitter follower growth in 2014, A graphic of 2014’s top 10 most tweeted-about artists, a graphic of 2014’s top 5 most tweeted-about fan armies, A graphic of 2014’s top 5 most tweeted-about songs, and 2014’s top 5 most tweeted-about albums.
 
According to the research, it was observed that Hip-hop, R&B and pop were 2014’s three most popular music genres on Twitter. Katy Perry (@katyperry) was the most followed musician on Twitter in 2014, while Justin Bieber (@JustinBieber) was the most tweeted about artist. One Direction (@onedirection’s )members: Harry Styles(@Harry_Styles), Niall Horan(@NiallOfficial) and Liam Payne(@Real_Liam_Payne) sent the most popular tweets of 2014, alongside Justin Bieber.
 
Katy Perry who emerged with 60,098,378 followers, gained 13 million followers in the year under review. Similarly, Justin Bieber with 56,886,079 followers gained 11 million followers in 2014. Others include: Taylor Swift with 46,908,955 followers having had an increament of 10 million followers, Lady Gaga with 42,781,100 followers having had an increament of 3.7million,  Britney Spears with 39,590,901 having had additional 6.1million followers, Rihanna with 38,031,597 followers having had 6.2million followers, J.Timberlake with 37,650,177 having achieved 9.1million additional followers; JLO with 29,773,423, having gained 4.7million followers, Shakira with 27,849,713 having had additional 5.2followers, DDlovato with 25,466,701 followers had achieved 6.2million followers, Pink with 25,095,520 having gotten additional 4.6million followers,  Selena Gomez with 24,553,885 having had 7.9million followers.

Ariana Grande with 20,972,715 having gained 9.5million followers, Alicia Keys with 20,228,426 followers, Bruno Mars with 19,242,141 followers, Lil Tunechi with 19,145,531 having gained 4.9million, Eminem with 18,848,755 followers, Miley Cyrus with 18,786,826 having gotten an addition of 4million followers, PitBull with 18,412,077 having gotten 3.6million followers, NickiMinaj with 18,328,373 followers, Drakes with 17,966,994 having attained 4.8million followers, Avril Lavigne with 17,203,435 having gained 3.6 million, Wizkhalifa with 16,059,879 followers having had extra 4.7 million followers, Mariah Carey with 15,208,517 and Chris Brown with 13,752,495 followers.

In the Same Vein, Nigeria musical artists were not let out in achieving additional followers on Twitter within 2014. As at 2013, Wizkid, a popular artist in Nigeria had 780,811 followers but as at December 2014, his number of followers increased to 1.35million. Also, Dbanj who had 629,534 followers in 2013, had an increase to about 1.05m in 2014. Don Jazzy who had 579,446 followers in 2013, had his followership increased  to 988k. Similarly, Banky W who in 2013 had 521, 679 had 914k in 2014. 2face on his part, had 515,895 followers in 2013, but by the end of 2014, his followership had increased to 928k. Likewise Davido who in 2013 had 460,417 followers in 2013, ended with 1.05million in 2014. Tiwa Savage on her part had a followership of 861k followers compared to the 422,656 followers she had in 2013. Ice Prince also had an increament in followership from 354,472 in 2013 to 594k in 2014. And lastly Genevieve who had 416,589 followers in 2013 had an increase to 733k in 2014. 

According to Twitter’s research, 2014 most Tweeted-about fan armies are Justin Bieber, One Direction, Kesha, Demi Lovato, and Girls generation. Given a graphic of top most tweeted about songs, Pharrell Williams’s Happy was most tweeted, Next was John Legend’s All of me, Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, Ariana Grande’s Problem, and Lady Gaga’s ArtPop. Five most tweeted album were Beyonce, 5 seconds of Summer, Micheal Jackson, Ed Sheeran.

The 20 most loved Nigerian  musical artistes in 2014 are Tuface, Davido, Frank Edwards, Wizkid, PSquare, Flavor, Rev Father Mbaka, Tope Alabi, Aminu Ala, Chiyere Udoma, Mammam Shata, Sanni Danja, Nura Inuwa, Osita Osadebe, Dbanj, Phyno, Terry G, Panam Percy, Solomon Lange, and Sinachi Kalu.
Artist details are taken from Twitter and includes details of their follower counts and the number of songs they have on the service.

With this, one can conclude that Musical artists haven’t done badly on Twitter in the year 2014. This follows from the fact that they place so much worth on Twitter, and the fact that they have increased fans and followers, will cause more people to make use of Twitter much more than before, thus increasing the number of users on the information-sharing media.
