A letter inviting National Olympic Committees to discuss potential bids for the 2024 Summer Games has been sent today by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), officially opening what will be a two-a-half-year bidding contest.
In line with the resolutions approved by the IOC in December as part of President Thomas Bach's "Olympic Agenda 2020" reform package.
The newly-created invitation phase is a way to assess interest eight months ahead of the formal deadline for applications on September 15, and to explain the potential ramifications of the Agenda 2020 proposals passed at last month's Extraordinary IOC Session in Monte Carlo.
So far, Rome and Boston are the only declared candidates, and Germany has said it will submit a bid either from Berlin or Hamburg.
The opening process comes a week after Boston was confirmed as the sole US contender after beating off opposition from Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
After the invitation phase concludes in September, there will be an information seminar hosted by the IOC in Lausanne from October 7 until 9, ahead of the deadline for cities to submit Application Files and guarantee letters on January 8, 2016.
The host city will be selected in 2017 at the 130th IOC Session, which will be held in Peruvian capital Lima.
