Germany's football Bundesliga has achieved record revenues for the 10th season in a row, the German Football League (DFL) said Thursday.
The league posted revenues of 2.45 billion euros (2.85 billion dollars) in the 2013-2014 season, up 12.9 per cent over the previous year, figures in the 2015 Bundesliga Report show.
Thirteen of the 18 clubs in the top-flight Bundesliga operated profitably last season, one more than the previous year. Overall 24 of the 36 first and second-division clubs made a profit after tax.
"Looking forward, the outlook remains upbeat as Bundesliga's economic growth is continuing unabated," Bundesliga chief executive Christian Seifert said.
"This will form the basis for the clubs' future performance and allow them to finance the manifold activities which they carry out for the good of society as a whole."
Seifert said turnover next season looked set to cross the 2.5-billion-euro threshold for the first time. The Bundesliga's turnover is still behind England's Premier League, which is well above 3 billion euros, but ahead of Spain, Italy and France of the other major European leagues.
Germany is the only country in Europe in which the national team and the league "are developing parallel," Seifert said, underlining that success on the field is going hand in hand with a sound financial base.
Germany can point to last year's World Cup win in Brazil, the national team's top spot in the FIFA rankings and the Bundesliga's third position behind Spain and England in UEFA's five-year coefficient to show that the domestic game "has used its solid financial foundations to achieve outstanding sporting results," he said.
On match attendances, the Bundesliga leads the way worldwide with an average of 42,609 fans attending the games, around 90 per cent of overall capacity. The average second-division gate last season was 17,853, making it also the top-ranked internationally at that level. Matches involving German professional football clubs can be watched in 208 of the 209 FIFA member nations.
