Apple Buys British Music Analytics Start-Up Semetric

In an attempt to relaunch its Beats Music streaming music service later in the year, Apple has acquired British music analytics start-up Semetric.

Semetric runs the Musicmetric analytics tool, launched in 2008 to allow music labels to track sales data, BitTorrent downloads and social networking statistics. It later expanded to YouTube videos and audio streams.

Apple told UK's The Guardian newspaper, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plan.” Semetric declined to comment. The Guardian speculates that Apple will Semetric’s technology as part of plans to relaunch the Beats Music streaming service under a new brand, possibly iTunes.

Apple gets about 10 percent of its revenue from iTunes software and services. The business brought in $18.1 billion in the year ended September, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
