Spain to host 2018 Women's Basketball World Cup

The International Basketball Federation (Fiba) has announced that Spain will host its inaugural Women’s World Cup in 2018.

Spain overcame Israel in the race to host the tournament, which will replace the World Championship for Women – last hosted by Turkey from September 27 to October 5.

Spain hosted this year’s men’s World Cup, while it’s women’s team was runner-up at the 2014 World Championship.

Spain has one of the best women’s teams in the world. It won the European championship in 2013, and was runner-up in this year’s world championship.

FIBA says on its website that Spain "has past experience of hosting a leading FIBA world event."
