Plans are in top gears by authorities if the Italian Football League (Serie A) and German Football League (Bundesliga) to introduce goal-line technology from the start of next season.
Last week, Germany’s Bundesliga voted to approve the use of GLT from the start of the 2015-16 season, with Hawk-Eye awarded a three-year contract.
This week, President of Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Carlo Tavecchio expressed his keenness to introduce goal-line technology (GLT) into Serie A next season.
The introduction of GLT into the top division of Italian and German football would make both leagues the latest major European league to adopt such technology.
Tavecchio said he supports the use of GLT, but admits its cost would likely limit it to use in Serie A. “In the next Federal Council I will propose a joint committee between Serie A and Serie B to introduce goal-line technology,” Tavecchio told Italian radio station GR Parlamento. “I believe that technology cannot stay away from football and the ‘goal-no goal’ system is now a safe technology. It will cover only the next Serie A season. As a matter of cost, it would not be easy to adopt it in Serie B.”
Tavecchio has also said the use of technology could be extended to rule on controversial incidents such as penalty decisions. He added: “I emphasise that we have not asked for slow motion replays, but we require to determine the exact position of a player. The awarding of a foul will remain at the discretion of the referee. It takes 23 seconds to see if the action is inside or outside the penalty area, the referee then has a link via a bracelet for an immediate response.”
