Organisers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have revealed they are reviewing their venue plans amid concerns about cost.
Tokyo Governor Yoichi Masuzoe told a city assembly meeting today (Tuesday) that the overall plan for the venues needs to be adjusted, adding that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already been informed of this intention.
"We must respond to concerns over rising facilities costs, including rising costs for labor and construction materials," Masuzoe said. "We will review the plan as soon as possible from that point of view and revise what needs to be revised appropriately and promptly so that there will be no obstacles for the preparations for the games."
Costs for the 2020 Games have been in the news of late, specifically concerning plans for the showpiece Olympic Stadium. The Japan Sport Council (JSC) last month gave the go-ahead for the construction of Tokyo’s new Olympic Stadium, with the 80,000-seat venue expected to cost $1.6bn (€1.2bn) to build.
The stadium is set to be constructed on the site of the 56-year-old, 54-000-seat National Stadium. The current venue will be dismantled over 15 months beginning in July with the new stadium due to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup, which Japan will host in 2019.
